Vampires in the Buzz

It can be difficult not to notice that vampires are another big thing. New television shows, movies, and books with a theme of the undead are popping up everywhere, looking to catch some of the after-splash of the Twilight phenomenon. To be truthful, it kind of bothers me. I’ve been keen on vampires for over ten years, mostly due to my love of the cult-hit, Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

So , I realize vampires are kind of ( grrrrrr ) bad…evil….monsters! So it’s just a bit bit worrying seeing all of these preteens dream of doing god knows what with a vampire ( asking R. Pattinson to bite them? ) and books that really dilute the myth making vampires these fluffy bunny creatures with bad teeth.

True Blood on HBO

All that aside, I have actually loved the HBO drama True Blood. Like most HBO shows, it’s not scared to push the boundaries, providing much enjoyment. The 1st season of the show follows the first book in Charlaine Harris’ vampire series, Dead until Dark. Since I liked the show, I determined to give it a read.

Exposition

For those unacquainted with the show, it follows barmaid Sookie Stackhouse in the tiny northerly Louisiana city of Bon Temps. By some peculiar coincidental, Sookie can read minds, apart from the mind of a certain vampire ( Bill ) who enters the story handily at the start of chapter one. In this world, vampires are out of the closet ( or coffin? ), so society knows they are real.

The japanese discovered a technique of making manmade blood so that vampires could feed without injuring the human-folk, making them ready to live ‘mainstream. ‘ After that it is a standard story of boy saves girl, boy likes girl, boy puts girl in peril a lot, girl’s bro has a large amount of sex….and folks die.

The top ten are :

10. Angel from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series, and later his very own spinoff series Angel.

9. Felipe De Castro from the Sookie Stackhouse / True Blood book and television series.

8. Lara from the Dresden Files book and TV series.

7. Dracula from the 1897 novel and numerous motion picture and TV renditions.

6. Spike from the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV series.

5. Lilith from ancient vampire lore.

4. Nosferatu, first appearing in the 1922 flick of the same name, a modification of Dracula.

3. Bill from the Sookie Stackhouse / True Blood book and TV series.

2. Alice from the Twilight series of books and movies.

…And the most popular vampire online is no surprise…

1. Edward from the Twilight series of books and flicks.

I assembled this list be looking for the word Vampire + the series name + the vampire name on several search sites. This ensured that I was indeed getting results for a selected vampire from a particular series. The vampire’s acceptance was judged by the total number of pages found for them. Therefore for example to rank Edward from Twilight I searched for “Vampire Twilight Edward”, which had millions and millions of pages.

In some measure to stop The Twilight Series from absolutely overwhelming this list I only allowed any one series a maximum of 2 spots on this list. The most well liked vampires from Twilight were ( in order ) Edward, Alice, Jane, Victoria, Jasper, Laurent, Marcus, Carlisle, Rosalie, Esme, James, Aro, and Demetri. True Blood also had too many vamps on the list. The complete True Blood list ( in order ) is Bill, Felipe de Castro, Eric, Jessica, and Gdric.

The vampires who did not make the cut were Selene from subculture, Darren Shan, Vlad the Impaler from the 14th century, Thomas from the Dresden Files, Lestat from Anne Rice, Jean-Claude from Anita Blake, Lewis from Anne Rice, Count von Count from Sesame Street, Elizabeth Bathory from the fifteenth century, and Count Chocula.

HBO’s vampire series “True Blood ” kicked off yesterday evening with it’s premier episode “Strange Love”. The episode is the series pilot where a waitress as a local New Orleans bar meets a vampire named Bill, and from there a complicated relationship begins. So what did I prefer to think of the initial episode of the show?

Do I believe it has legs? All of those questions will be answered soon enough within this review. But for now, let me tell you what i did and didn’t like about it, kicking off with the “likes ” first. I did like the gothic look to it, which is perfectly predicted and normal considering it’s filmed in Louisiana, the deep south.

If you’re acquainted with 2005’s releases “The Skeleton Key ” with Kate Hudson, and “Venom ” with Agnes Bruckner, then you already know the landscape of the series visually. Another like of mine was Anna Paquin’s character Sookie…well…at least halfly.

Paquin plays the job of a southern barmaid pretty well, and her look is certainly right for the task and the show overall. I also appreciated the attempt at adding some diversity to the show with two black main characters, one of the standouts being Sookie’s best mate Tara Thorton, played by Rutina Wesley.

Though in most shows or series filmed in New Orleans, the casting directors are fast to represent the right racial makeup of the city, unlike “Seinfeld ” which managed to get through a whole 8 seasons without representing the extraordinary diversity of midtown NY City.

The personality was originally meant to be played by Brooke Kerr ( Whitney from Passions ), but I felt Wesley was lots more authentic in look and perspective. I also liked the opening scene of the first episode, which had a young couple going into a local store and getting into a verbal showdown with the store clerk posing as a vampire, and a real vampire / redneck.

Prior to watching the hit HBO show “True Blood ” I had no awareness of the name Alan Ball. Clearly I was indifferent to any of his work. That is what I believed till I researched Mr. Ball and learned that we have got a long history together via his writing, directing and my viewing of his varied works. Ball wrote “American Beauty ” which is an Oscar winning film and he was one of minds behind another hit HBO show, “six Feet Under. ”

My addiction to “True Blood ” occurred fast and was nearly immediate. I was one of those people who had completely ignored the show the first season and just happened to catch a marathon and as they say “the rest is history. ”

Months before I saw the show my cousin discussed it to me and explained the storyline ; she then raved about the show. My immediate thought was ” I’m not jumping on this entire vampire craze going on now. ” I listened but thought “this all sounds so ridiculous and silly no way will I be interested in this show. ” “synthetic blood ” come on, really?

It’s months later , I’m home ill, I have watched the 4 seasons of “House ” that I own more times than I care to confess. It was to the point where I was citing House’s acerbic comments in my sleep. I decided it was time to tune up into something else so I gave “True Blood ” a try.

From the instant, the couple come speeding down the road entering into some pretty risque behavior stopping curtly to go inside of a corner store advertising that they sell True Blood, you are hooked. You have got no option but to keep voyeuristically following the young couple. The 2 obnoxiously go inside and talk with the clerk about True Blood and vampires in New Orleans.

Ten Funniest Sitcoms Ever

Three’s Company: This show started in the 1970s and was a surprise hit. A guy pretending to be gay and living with 2 women was very provocative back then. Maybe even taboo to many during that era.

The Dick Van Dyke Show. Who hasn’t heard of this show? And for those fortunate enough to watch it in it’s prime. It is well deserving of it’s position in this list.

8. Arrested Development. A newer show created by Ron Howard. Based on the lives of the once wealthy Bluth family. Very funny and unfortunately did not last a very long time on the air.

7. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia. A very funny show which gives off the same vibe as Seinfeld but with a more adult theme added to it. You will love the characters.

I Love Lucy. This very funny show has been showing on the air since 1951. Obviously, re-runs but still funny even in today’s standards. This show has many die-hard fans proven by the I Love Lucy conventions every year.

Five. Curb Your Enthusiasm. From the creator of Seinfeld, Larry David, is brilliant when playing his selfish and grossly politically incorrect alter ego. Very profane language.

4. The Simpsons. 20 years! That’s an insane amount of time yet every single episode has been hilarious. Homer, Bart, Marge, Lisa, and Maggie have provided us with laughs all this time.

All In The Family. Another one of the classics that opened more doors for other sitcoms. Incredibly funny but they did so with intelligence rather than cheap shots.

Two. Seinfeld. Always classified as the funniest sitcom of all time, even though it was often called “The show about nothing.” It was not only consistently funny, they knew when to end it. Seinfeld went out with a bang. For those who have watched the entire series, you will note that the show began and ended with the same sentence.

The Honeymooners. How funny can 4 characters in a kitchen be? Apparently, very funny. Insanely funny in fact and this show is still being aired on television for that very fact.

Sharpe Heads For The Throne

English Sharpe actor Sean Bean, the also played Boromir in Lord of the Rings has been reported to have been cast in the lead role in the HBO planned series ‘A games of Thrones’ based on George RR Martin popular ‘Song of Fire and Ice’ series of fantasy books.

No date has been set for the pilot as yet, and there is no promise that HBO will commit to a full series either, but with an impressive cast list headed up by Bean, this project is definitely being taken seriously.

Sean has been cast in lead role of Eddard Stark a Lord who is pressured to act as advisor to the ruthless royal family. Other cast members already confirmed to feature in the Pilot include Kit Harrington, Jack Gleeson, Harry Lloyd, and Peter Dinklage, with more key roles still to be filled.

The series is been adapted and produced by David Benioff and Dan Weiss. David Benioff has recently suggested a ‘crappy’ tagline for the project could be, “The Sopranos in Middle-earth”, which must get you thinking. If the series is true to the books plot elements should contain a spot of conspiracy, child murder, incest, corruption, conspiracy, a rival claimant to the throne across the sea, the still-festering legacy of a civil war 20 years before, a growing threat in the North and did I say conspiracy? We will see a show which is much grittier than previous fantasy adaptations Sean Bean has starred in.

Filming is scheduled to begin in Northern Ireland in October 2009, at Paint Hall Studios in Belfast. It has also been reported that the BBC will have a significant financial involvement in the series in a similar way they did with HBO’s Rome series.

Sean Bean shot to fame as the character Major Richard Sharpe, the ITV series of Sharpe TV films in the early 90’s, Was made world famous in the role of Boromir in the Lord of the Rings films, but has also stared in many other Hollywood films such as Ronin, Patriot Games and Troy.

Sean Bean shot to fame playing Major Richard Sharpe in the TV adaptation of Bernard Cornwell Sharpe books, the first of which was Sharpe’s Eagle.
